I have been collecting the Hungarian issues of Franz Joseph (1848-1916) for many years, seeking out the finest examples of each type from US sources to the auction houses of Europe. This 1892-1916 subset of Franz Joseph Hungarian coinage represents the final issues of the Austro-Hungarian Compromise under Franz Joseph, from the new korona system types in 1892 until the final issues leading up to his death in 1916. After the death of Franz Joseph I, Austro-Hungarian Compromise issues would be struck for only two more years under Charles I (Károly IV of Hungary).
The 1868-1916 portion of the Franz Joseph type set was the area I first approached collecting Hungarian coinage. The enjoyment I found in collecting this set led me to pursue the Hungarian War of Independence (1848-1849) short set, as well as the extremely challenging Austrian occupation coinage issued by Hungary from 1849-1867.
Aside from the 1907-1908 regular issue 100 korona which is a difficult coin to find outside of restrikes, all of the coins in this set are readily available to collectors in uncirculated grades with a bit of searching. Finding examples of most types in MS65 or better though, can be a significant challenge. For this set I have not specifically focused on grade but rather a combination of surface preservation and eye appeal that sometimes leads to the selection and retention of a particularly outstanding coin over other examples that may be technically better.
The coins selected for these slots are not my highest scoring coins, but are the most appealing examples of the types, which are frequently high grade examples of common dates. I hope you enjoy my selections that I have collected here in pursuit of this set.
