In 1848, Hungary revolted against Habsburg rule under the leadership of Lajos Kossuth (often referred to as the George Washington of Hungary). During the war, the mints were seized, and the Hungarian Kingdom types were altered to feature legends in Hungarian instead of Latin. The 1K and 6K types were largely new creations, with the Hungarian arms. In 1849, Austria was badly losing the war, and they called to Russia for help. Tsar Nicholas I sent an army nearly 300,000 strong to crush the Hungarian rebellion.
After the failed War of Independence, Hungary lost its sovereignty and was placed under martial law (1849-1867). This was a dark time for Hungary that was not resolved until the creation of the Austro-Hungarian Compromise of 1867. The Compromise saw Franz Joseph I crowned as the King of Hungary, and led to a golden age for the country.
The coins of Hungary from this period are generally difficult to find in high grades, with the 1848KB 10 krajczar being the big key in this set, followed by the 1849NB krajczar and the 1848 ducat. This is a set that I hope to upgrade over the years, in pursuit of the finest extant coins.
