This is a short set of Hungarian silver 25 forint commemorative types issued between 1956 and 1967, which are some of the very first modern Hungarian non-circulating commemorative issues. In these first years following the Revolution of 1956, few commemorative types were produced, with 1961-1968 seeing only bullion silver and gold commemorative types struck for export.
The first modern Hungarian non-circulating commemorative series was issued just prior to this in 1948 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the 1848 War of Independence, however, as the largest silver coin in that series was a 20 forint, it cannot be included in this set. The 1956 25 forint that is included in the first slot in this set was struck as part of its own commemorative series celebrating the 10th year of the new forint. The other coins in this set are part of a bullion series produced from 1961-1968 featuring the notable Hungarians Franz Liszt, Béla Bartók, Miklós Zrínyi, Zoltán Kodály, and Ignác Semmelweis. Unfortunately no Semmelweis coin from this series can be included in this set since by 1968 inflation had led to the revaluing of the 25 forint (the smallest coin in the set) as a 50 forint coin. This trend would continue with successive commemorative issues, effectively ending the 25 forint denomination.
