Three rare dates and three scarce dates are part of the 17 coins that make up the 1886 Mint Set. The "stopper" to the set is the 1886 $20 Double Eagle with only 40-60 known survivors from an initial mintage of 1,000 pieces. The other two rare dates are the 1886-S Dime and the 1886 Quarter that both have surviving populations of less than 165 pieces.
Coins in my set deserving of mention are:
Fewest (160) grading submissions - 1886-S MS-63 Dime. This coin was once part of the famous John Jay Pittman collection.
Most valuable - 1886 AU-58 $3 Gold piece
Great eye appeal - 1886 MS-61 Nickel. I chose this coin because of the unusually strong strike with BOTH ears of corn well defined.
