It requires 22 different coins to complete the 1864 Mint Set. Only 5 of the dates regularly appear for sale at auctions while the other 17 dates vary from elusive to downright rare. Based on census population figures, the two rarest coins are the 1864 $2.50 gold quarter eagle with just 22 examples slabbed by both major grading firms and the 1864-S $5.00 half eagle with 29 slabs to choose from. The two most common coins are the Two Cent Piece with over 12,000 coins slabbed and the 1864 bronze Indianhead cent with nearly 9,000 coins slabbed.
The following coins in this set deserve special comment:
Fewest (152) grading submissions - 1864 MS-63 Gold Dollar
Most valuable - 1864 MS-62 $3 gold piece
Best eye appeal - 1864 MS-65 Three Cent Silver
