36 different coins are required to complete this difficult set. Nine of the coins can be considered rare as they have known populations of 200 pieces or less. The rarest coin of the set is the 1856-O Gold Double Eagle with only 28 grading submissions recorded by both NGC and PCGS combined. You can expect to pay around $450k for an AU-55 specimen if you can located one for sale. Second rarest would be the 1956-D Gold Quarter Eagle with about 55 grading submissions recorded.
Some of the better coins in my set are:
Fewest (99) grading submissions - 1856-D AU-55 Gold Dollar. This is the 3rd. rarest coin of the set by population count.
Most valuable - 1856-S MS-61 Gold $3 piece. (Nearly all survivors show some wear.)
Best eye appeal - A tie between the 1956 MS-63 Brown Large Cent or 1956 MS-64 Gold Dollar.
Unusual variety - 1856-O AU-53 Seated Half with boldly repunched date.
