In turn-of-the-century America, nickels were workhorse coins that could buy everything from newspapers to cigars to admission to one of those newfangled nickelodeons. It was a rare American indeed who could resist such temptations, and as a result, V nickels today are far scarcer than both mintage figures and price guide values might suggest. The vast majority of surviving pieces, with the possible exception of the 1883 "No Cents," exist in heavily worn grades.
