Set Introduction: Heritage, Strategy, and Enhancement
This collection of Morgan Silver Dollars is based on three main ideas that make it unique and personal within the NGC Registry:
The Legacy: I inherited the core of this collection from my grandparents, who may have gotten the coins from circulation or the bank as early as the 1920s. This part of the collection connects me to a past era of American commerce and family history, and I continue to add to it.
The Everyman: This set follows the Everyman collecting philosophy, focusing on the grades where most of these inherited dollars fall. Most coins range from AU-53 to MS-64, with a few exceptions. The majority, however, are MS-62 and MS-63. This approach highlights coins that are affordable for most collectors and have historical character, rather than just aiming for rare conditions.
The VAM Enhancement: While variety hunting is not the primary focus, this set aims to be a complete date-and-mint Morgan Dollar set, enhanced by the deliberate inclusion of interesting VAMs.
I started collecting graded Morgans in 2009 when I sent some family coins to PCGS. In the early 2010s, I sent more coins to NGC for grading. In 2025, I retrieved the ungraded coins from storage and carefully reviewed them under magnification, using online references such as VAMworld. This helped me identify coins that matched known VAM varieties. I then submitted these identified coins to NGC for grading, focusing on documenting the variety, even if the coins received lower Mint State (MS) or About Uncirculated (AU) grades.
Variety Documentation: While NGC labels many well-known VAMs, they do not label many lesser-known VAMs. For this collection, I will thoroughly document any significant VAMs I identify in the coin descriptions. This will include the exact VAM number, making it easy for other collectors to find the specific die marker on VAMworld.
This collection is always evolving, combining family history, strategic collecting, and the ongoing excitement of finding die varieties.
