I have visited these islands many times in my life. Sunning on the white sand beaches, snorkeling and diving reefs (and wrecks) are just some of the fun things to do on these islands. Tortola is the largest island and has the capital city of Road Town.
I originally opened this type set in 2020 so I could place my BVI Kennedy coins in it as I create my custom "Camelot" collection of Kennedy coins, as well as a few BVI dollar coins I had for this set that I picked up here and there.
I went "on a quest" to complete this set and the majority of the coins were purchased in 2020 and the occasional coins that came out later.
Even though I thought it would be a simple goal of completing this set, little did I realize how RARE some of these coins will be.
One coin (or should I say SET) that was (and is) hard to find was the 1985 Butterfly Fish Dollar coin in silver. Many of these coins come in cupro-nickel. But the silver one comes in a limited silver proof set with only a little over 1300 sets minted. Currently I have a complete set I plan to send in to NGC.
An interesting find is the 1977 and 1978 coins actually have 2 versions of the coinage.... a standard dollar coin and a dollar coin representing a "Jubilee" for the crown.
My goal is to have COMPLETED this set with very attractive gem state coins. A rating of 65 or better. I did better than I had hoped! And keeps improving over time.
So let me introduce you to some of the engravers of the coins in this set:
Arnold Machin's (pronounced Mait-chin) created the portrait of the Queen Elizabeth II used in many British coins from 1968 to 1984. This Queen's effigy was still on coins of New Zealand and Australia in 1985 as well as Canada's coinage until 1989. The portrait is used from 1973 to 1984 on this coin set.
=======
Gilroy Roberts served as the ninth Chief Engraver of the United States Mint from 1948 until 1964, and is perhaps most famous for designing the obverse of the Kennedy Half Dollar. Only a few months after the Kennedy Half Dollar was minted, Roberts retired from the US Mint. Roberts would continue using his talents to personally engrave coins and medals for the Franklin Mint. One very popular series of official coins that he produced was for the British Virgin Islands, which depicted various birds native to the islands on all the denominations of these coins. The Frigate Bird is featured on these one dollar coins from 1973 to 1984.
=======
Raphael David Maklouf is a British sculptor, best known for designing an effigy of Queen Elizabeth II's third portrait that was used on many of the coins of many Commonwealth nations including the British Virgin Islands. The Portrait was used on the 1985 Butterfly Fish coin.
=======
Ian Rank-Broadley is an award winning British sculptor who has produced many acclaimed works, among which are several designs for British coinage and the British Commonwealths. In 1997 he won the Royal Mint competition for a new effigy of Elizabeth II to appear on the obverse of circulated British and some Commonwealth coinage from 1998 onward.
=======
Jody Clark is an engraver employed by the Royal Mint. He designed the fifth and current portrait of Queen Elizabeth II in a competition. The effigy is featured on British coins since 2015. Clark was younger than any of the other four designers to have created portraits of Elizabeth II for British coinage at age 33.

Personal Note:
This set doesn't max the possible points that could be obtained with this collection.
