Unique among the world’s great religions, the Bahá’í Faith governs itself through democratic elections of Local and National "Spiritual Assemblies". In future, Bahá'u'lláh says these will be called Local and National "Houses of Justice".
Only these elected bodies, as a whole and presently composed of nine members, may make binding decisions in the Bahá’í Faith—no individual Bahá’í has any power to tell others what to do, render judgments or enforce spiritual laws, not even the members of the Assemblies have any authority as individuals.
There is no clergy in the Bahá’í Faith. Bahá'u'lláh's Revelation gives God's message to humanity for today, and it includes a unifying, democratically-elected administration, free of the influence of any special class of learned or power base or appointed rulers.
This democratic process, along with the Covenant that all of God's Messengers have brought to humanity, ensures that Bahá’ís follow a path of building unity in one, global human family. It also helps explains why the Bahá’í Faith has not divided into sects or denominations and remains unified amongst its approximately 7 million believers after almost two centuries (founded in 1844 -- see our coin set for that year and learn more about the Báb, Herald of the Faith).
In April 1963, exactly 100 years after Bahá'u'lláh's Declaration that He was the promised one expected in all the world's major religions, and that the time for "peace on earth, goodwill toward all" had arrived, Bahá’ís around the world elected the first Universal House of Justice, the supreme administrative body of the Faith.
"O people of God! That which traineth the world is Justice, for it is upheld by two pillars, reward and punishment. These two pillars are the sources of life to the world. Inasmuch as for each day there is a new problem and for every problem an expedient solution, such affairs should be referred to the House of Justice that the members thereof may act according to the needs and requirements of the time."
~ Tablets of Bahá'u'lláh, pp. 128-129.
This remarkable institution—the planet’s first truly globally elected governing body—now administers, directs and lovingly guides the worldwide Bahá’í community. You can view the website of the Universal House of Justice here:
