Welcome to the Coin*Cat 1853 Mint Set, "Century Set" of my 1953
Birth Year: Awarded Best in Category by NGC for 2024/25
The set originated as a project in the early years of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Learning the effects of the various gold rushes on US silver coinage in the years leading up to the Civil War proved to be an adventure in itself.
Southern Branch Mints in the collection represent all denominations of gold coins produced at the Charlotte, Dahlonega, and New Orleans Mints in 1853.
Octagonal and Round California Territorial Fractional coins for the year can be found in the Coin*Cat 1853 California Fractional Gold Type Set.

It is doubtful one of the celebrated New Orleans, No Arrows, Seated Half Dollars will ever grace the Coin*Cat 1853 Mint Set.
Only four examples are known to exist.
My initial offer of $2,600 was briefly the winning bid when this coin was first offered in a January 2025 Heritage Auction.
The final hammer price? $288,000.00

To appreciate the rarity of this issue, NGC census shows a population of 54 in any grade.
PCGS estimates 70 uncirculated with only 12 grading MS65 or higher.
