Where Is the Australian Silver Koala Coin Minted?
The Silver Koala originates from Australia’s Perth Mint. While the obverse of the coin always depicts Queen Elizabeth II, the reverse side depicts the adorable native koala in a design that changes every year, making the Silver Koala an iconic coin.
How Much Silver Is in an Australia Silver Koala Coin?
Initially since its introduction in 2007, the series had been struck in 1 oz. of .999 fine silver. However, the 2018 Australia Silver Koala coin was the first Perth Mint Koala coin to be struck in .9999 fine silver, a purity the series would adapt moving forward. In recent years, Koalas, including the 2022 Koala, started featuring a security feature. This security feature is in the form of a micro-laser engraved letter that is detectable only under a magnifying glass which makes these coins significantly more difficult to counterfeit. The popularity of these coins has seen the release of special issues including gold high relief proofs in addition to both fractional gold proof issues and silver gilded pieces which vary year to year.
Annually Changing Koala Silver Coin Designs
As previously mentioned, each year the Perth Mint selects a different reverse featuring a Koala in a different pose. This has allowed for a range of designs featuring the less than cuddly marsupial over the series 14 years of issue. The obverse features the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II currently being used by the Perth Mint. From 2007 to 2019, the series utilized Ian Rank-Broadley’s portrait of the Queen before it transitioned to Jody Clark’s portrait in 2020.
Koala Coin Release Types and Grades Variety
Beyond the series’ annually changing designs, each unique issue is available in various release types and grades. The Australian Koala coin series is struck in both silver and gold and is also available in a myriad of different sizes ranging from ¼ ounce all the way up to one whole kilogram! In addition, there are different grades and finish types. This diversity gives anyone the ability to purchase one of these Perth Mint Koala coin, making it easy to add to, or start, an Australian Koala Coin collection!
