After the death of Queen Victoria in 1901, her eldest son, King Edward VII, ascended the throne. The coinage of Edward VII in India was issued between 1903 and 1910. The series included four silver denominations—Rupee, 1/2 Rupee, 1/4 Rupee, and 2 Annas—and three copper denominations—1/4 Anna, 1/2 Pice, and 1/12 Anna.
In 1906, a cupro-nickel 1 Anna coin was introduced. That same year, the copper coins were replaced by thinner bronze coins, though the obverse and reverse designs remained unchanged. As a result, 1906 coins exist in both copper and bronze varieties.
One distinctive feature of Edward VII coins is that the King is depicted bareheaded, without a crown. This is likely because Queen Victoria died on 22 January 1901, but Edward’s coronation did not take place until 9 August 1902. The master dies were prepared before the coronation, making it unsuitable to depict him with a crown.
An official announcement on 5 December 1902 declared that the new coins would be issued starting 1 January 1903. Interestingly, a crowned portrait was later used for the 1 Anna coin introduced in 1906, making it the only Edward VII coin in India to feature the King wearing a crown. A new portrait was reportedly prepared for 1910, but King Edward VII passed away that same year, ending his numismatic legacy.
