Queen Victoria reigned over the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland from 20 June 1837 until her death in 1901. Her reign, known as the Victorian era, lasted 63 years and seven months—longer than any previous British monarch. In 1876, the British Parliament conferred upon her the title "Empress of India" through the Royal Titles Act. As a result, coin inscriptions in India changed from "Victoria Queen" to "Victoria Empress" starting in 1877.
Coinage in British India after 1857 came under the direct authority of the Crown, marking India’s transition from East India Company (EIC) rule to a British colony. British Indian coinage is typically divided into two main periods: the East India Company issues (pre-1835), and the Imperial issues (post-1858).
EIC coinage is further categorized into Presidency issues—issued separately by the Madras, Bombay, and Bengal Presidencies—and the unified coinage system adopted in 1835 across all British territories. The Imperial issues, beginning in 1862, feature the obverse portraits of Queen Victoria and later monarchs, with Victoria’s coins dated between 1862 and 1901.
