Coins bearing the effigy of King George V were minted in India from 1911 to 1936. During World War I (1914–1918), the rising price of silver led to the discontinuation of the silver ½ Rupee, ¼ Rupee, and 2 Annas. In their place, new cupro-nickel denominations were introduced—8 Annas, 4 Annas, and 2 Annas—joining the existing cupro-nickel 1 Anna coin. However, these new coins were not well received by the public, leading to the early discontinuation of the 8 Annas and 4 Annas issues. Production of the ¼ Rupee and ½ Rupee silver coins resumed shortly thereafter, while the 2 Annas continued in cupro-nickel.
