This set is dedicated in memory of my late father Victor who nourished and encouraged my passion for collecting Jefferson nickels.
The series was (and still is) a very affordable way to collect higher-grade coins, though the emphasis on full-steps coins in gem grades and above has driven prices up.
Still, I remember the days when my father would take our family to Gimbel's Department Store, and I would rush to the coin and stamp department to see what coins they had for sale. Many of the coins that we obtained then, some four decades ago or more, are now part of this collection. I've also acquired many over the years both raw and slabbed. I've reached my preliminary goal of breaking into the top 10 for complete sets, and now I plan to fill as many spots as I can, which I expect to be a slow process.
My goals for this set (and in general) are to add coins that are the best quality I can find for a particular grade. I prefer coins with silky smooth fields, even though they may not be as lustrous as coins with visible flow lines (and maybe negatively impact the numerical grade.) I also try to place an emphasis of having indisputable steps detail whenever possible, though I do hold more than a few "placeholders" until I can replace them with better coins.
