My view on collecting colonial coinage.
When I returned to coin collecting in 2014 after a 56 year absence, colonial coinage captured my attention since they are so varied with wonderful stories. In pursuing this area, my focus has been on quality, rarity and beauty. Higley coppers stretch the term “beauty” for me but I found them to be so charming. I was fortunate to enter the field at a time when so many wonderful collections were coming to market. Other collectors have done the heavy leg work while I have been a fortunate beneficiary of their endeavors.
Each coin has been researched and selected by me one at a time. In every case, I wanted to know more about the coin and the series so that I would better appreciate its history and significance. The New Yorke In America token comes to mind on this aspect and I thank John Kleeberg for his wonderful research about the coin. My colleague and friend, Tony Lopez, discovered an amazing 1704 land patent that refers to 1676 and includes the following description, “the town upon the Isle of Manhattan, then called new Amsterdam, now called new Netherland, now called new Yorke or the of the province of new Yorke in America...” Discovering it was both exciting and rewarding. Collecting colonial coinage provides this opportunity to gain additional insight about the founding and development of our country. What a joy!
Over the next several years, I will selectively add a few additional coins but most of the heavy lifting has already taken place.
