In 1953 the U.S. Mint sold 128,800 Proof Sets. But the quality-control and packaging problems that had been haunting the Mint since its 1950 Proof production re-launch continued unabated. Finding high quality 1953 Proofs in any denomination can be difficult, most of them are scratched, toned or damaged in some way. While 1953 Proofs in the highest grades are getting expensive, in slightly lower grades even entry-level collectors can afford to own fine specimens. This year-set is the highest ranking 1953 Proof Set in the NGC Registry that doesn't include any cameos.

INTERESTING FACT: The U.S. Mint manufactured a total of 644,000 Proof coins in 1953. But only 633 of those coins have survived in Proof 69 condition. That's 0.09%. There are no Proof 70s.
