After an 8-year pause in production due to World War II, in 1950 the U.S. Mint resumed making Proof coins for collectors. Before 1950 the Mint sold Proof coins individually. Since then, they've been sold in year-sets. Just 51,386 Proof Sets were ordered in 1950 - the lowest mintage in the 1950-64 Post-War Proof series. With inexperienced staff, a lack of quality-control and packaging that actually damaged most of the coins, very few Proofs from the early years of this series have survived in the highest grades.
This is the highest ranking 1950 year-set in the NGC Registry that doesn't include any cameos. The standouts are the Proof 68 Lincoln Cent -- with only 1 graded higher -- and the Proof 67* Franklin Half Dollar. Only 15 Franklins that were produced in 1950 have ever been graded Proof 67* by NGC.
INTERESTING FACT: The U.S. Mint produced 51,386 Proof Sets in 1950, that's 256,930 coins in total. But only 856 (0.33%) of those Proof coins have survived in Proof 68-69 condition...and there are no Proof 70s. Talk about condition rarity!
