* The Bahá’í Faith began in 1844 *
During the evening of May 22 and extending through the early morning hours of May 23, the declaration by a young man in Shiraz, Persia brought God's latest guidance for humanity, including the imminent appearance of another Messenger even greater than Himself. His Ministry lasted a short six years - He was publicly executed in the city of Tabriz on 9 July 1850.
He was known by the title "the Báb", meaning “the Gate”, and similar to John The Baptist, His most important message was telling of the Promised One whose appearance in near future would be that "return" which every major world religion is expecting: the tenth Avatar and return of Krishna for Hindus; the fifth Buddha for Buddhists, the Buddha of universal fellowship; the advent of Sháh-Bahrám, the promised savior for Zoroastrians; for Jews, the Lord of Hosts; for Christians, the Return of Christ in the Glory of the Father; and for Muslims "the Great Announcement."
Thus, Bahá’ís believe humanity's advancement toward the age of unity among all its peoples continues as prophesied and foretold in every faith, that the process of achieving "peace on earth, goodwill towards all" and "on earth as it is in heaven" has definitively begun.
The Báb pronounced "O peoples of the earth, give ear unto God's holy Voice. Verily, the resplendent Light of God hath appeared in your midst, invested with this unerring Book, that ye may be guided aright to the ways of peace."
The Báb’s teachings, which spread rapidly, were viewed as heretical by the clergy and government of Persia. More than 20,000 of God's new believers were killed in a series of massacres throughout the country and graphically described by many Western officials and observers. These persecutions have continued to the present day. The United Nations has passed numerous resolutions post-1979 condemning human rights violations against Bahá’ís in Iran.
