NGC Discovers Palladium Eagles with Prooflike Surfaces - Posted on 10/4/2017
Qualifying coins receive the PL designation after the numeric grade on the NGC certification label.
Numismatic Guaranty Corporation® (NGC®) has discovered that some of the US Mint’s new Palladium American Eagle coins have Prooflike surfaces. Coins submitted to NGC with this appearance will receive the PL designation after the numeric grade on the NGC certification label.
Prooflike indicates that the surfaces exhibit a higher degree of reflectivity than is typically seen on a circulation-issue coin. The fields are mirrored and the devices may be frosted on both sides, reminiscent of a Proof coin.

The US Mint delivered the first Palladium American Eagles to its Authorized Purchasers earlier this week. The coins — the first palladium coins issued by the US Mint — have a face value of $25 and are comprised of 1 troy ounce of .9995 fine palladium. Palladium is a rare silver-white metal that is used in producing jewelry and catalytic converters, and trades at over $900 an ounce (as of early October 2017), about two-thirds the price of gold.
The obverse of these coins features a high relief version of the Mercury Dime obverse, while the reverse has a high relief version of an American Institute of Architects gold medal reverse by Adolph A. Weinman, the noted sculptor who also designed the Mercury Dime.
"I think this is the most exquisite and successful design for a US coin of the modern era," said Mark Salzberg, NGC Chairman. "It combines a classic obverse with a powerful reverse in beautiful high relief. The new Palladium American Eagle is truly magnificent."
NGC has created a special label to celebrate these coins.

These are the first palladium coins struck in Proof format by the United States. Last year, the first US palladium coins were struck as Mint State. NGC has graded more than 6,000 of the 2017 Palladium Eagles; a few hundred earned the Prooflike (PL) designation.
Discovered in the early 19th Century, palladium is a rare silver-white metal whose chief industrial use today is in the catalytic converters of automobiles.
The Palladium Eagles are comprised of 1 troy ounce of .9995 fine palladium. Trading around $900 an ounce (as of mid-August 2018), palladium remains below its historic high of just over $1,100 an ounce, set earlier this year.
The coins feature two high-relief designs by Adolph Weinman, the American sculptor whose work in the early 20th century still finds widespread favor with numismatists today. The obverse features a reincarnation of the Mercury Dime's obverse, while the reverse features the impressive eagle design from the reverse of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) gold medal.
To commemorate the first Proof Palladium American Eagles, NGC will offer an attractive certification label that features the coin’s eagle motif and highlights the significance of the palladium composition.
Submission Instructions:
Submit the Palladium Eagles under the Modern grading tier or higher.
The default label (at no additional charge) will be NGC’s Palladium Label #923 (shown below).

The 2020-W Palladium American Eagle with the NGC Palladium special label and Early Releases designation.
Palladium Eagles were first released in 2017 as a one-ounce bullion coin. In 2018, a Proof version was produced, followed by a Reverse Proof in 2019. The coins are composed of 1 troy ounce of .9995 fine palladium.
All of the Palladium Eagles showcase High Relief designs by Adolph Weinman, whose work in the early 20th century produced some of America’s most admired coins. A reincarnation of Weinman’s Winged Liberty from the Mercury Dime is featured on the obverse, and the powerful eagle on the reverse is from the American Institute of Architects gold medal.
The NGC coin description and Palladium Eagle special label articulate the coins’ High Relief design, eagle motif and palladium composition.
