Less than 28,000 non-Carson City Morgan Silver Dollars were encased in the hard black GSA holders prior to sale in the 1970's. Note that the holders are different than the Carson City GSA holders. The non-CC holder says United States at the top (see pictures). Unfortunately, no one recorded which dates or how many coins of each date were included in the 28,000. We are left to only guess, based on graded coins, until a new date gets verified and authenticated in the NGC population report. The dates listed here are the dates for which coins exist within the NGC population report. Other dates are known to exist, but have not been professionally graded.
Many of these coins were probably broken out of their holders, but we will never know how many. What we do know is that some dates are next to impossible to find. But the hunt is half the fun. These coins tend to sell for a premium over their value not in the GSA holder, and the rare ones can sell for a substantial premium. Prices for the rare dates and highly graded coins have risen so substantially over the last few years, I will probably not be able to acquire many more. I feel fortunate that I was able to get as many nice coins as I did at what now seems to be very reasonable prices.
The non-CC GSA's tend to be not as spectacular as the Carson City GSA's, with fewer highly graded coins, fewer proof-like coins, and only one deep mirror proof-like coin. But with a total maximum population of only 28,000 coins, you sometimes have to take what you can get. Only five have been graded star (all 1879-S and not for toning, but for beauty and cameo), and very few are toned.
The Non-CC uncirculated Morgans in the GSA hard packs came with their own certificate of authenticity. It had the initials MU (Mixed Uncirculated) at the top and was titled IMPORTANT. The COA indicated that the minimum bid for this category was $5.
Part of the beauty and historical significance of these coins is in the holder, and I wanted to show in my pictures a close up of the obverse (for higher graded coins) and a full holder obverse view. After all, aren't all Morgan GSA reverses MS66 anyway?
I am open to any reasonable offers if you have any rare dates to trade or sell (949)720-2118 or gsa_gem_quest@cox.net. The high prices seem to be flushing more of the rare dates out in the open, as more are now showing up in public auctions and being graded. As recent as August 2006 there were no 1878-S, 1884-P, 1900-O, or 1904-O coins graded. Now there are five 1878-S, one 1884-P, one 1900-O, and two 1904-O (this information is pretty out of date now, but I thought I would leave it as it provides some prospective on the rarity of the dates and how more coins have entered the population reports over the years).
