Canadian Masterpiece Set 016
🥇2017 Best in Series
🥇2018 Best in Series
This sprawling set represents all of the S$20 Proof Silver Coins issued in 2016 by the Royal Canadian Mint. This set contains a number of themes, with coins ranging from the various endangered birds of Canada all the way coins that highlight the hard-fought battles of Europe during the Great War.
Some of my favorites include the 'Geometry in Art' series of coins. In this series, some of the more well-known animals in Canada are illustrated by a series of angular geometric shapes that form a contemporary-style design that is unique to these coins. I can certainly appreciate the artistic talent that went into these coins!
Perhaps the most desired coins in this series are the Ukranian Pysanka Egg coin, the Maze coin and the Maple Leaf Shape coins. That being said, the avant-garde coins don't really float my boat and can almost be labelled as being 'gimmicky or kitschy'. Meaningful designs often find poignancy in their simpleness. For example, the majestic bison coin. The bison stands proud atop the grass, a timeless image that could have occurred at any moment over the past 100,000 years on the Great Plains. Another coin that strikes me as beautiful is the 'Ski Chalet' coin. A simple winter cottage sitting on a snowy hill. The colors of the chalet are vivid and the snow untouched on the slope remind me of ski vacations I used to go on when I was younger. What wonderful memories.
This set is also a milestone for me and my collecting interests. I had decided early in the year that this would be the last date that I would be collecting on Canadian coinage. Stated another way, I have restricted myself to collecting Canadian coins that are dated 2016 or earlier. Quite honestly, this in itself is a daunting task. But I digress. The main reason for this is that the RCM simply produces far too many coins, and many of the themes do not resonate with me anymore.
I hope you enjoy this set! It was fun to assemble and I am proud to own the #1 set in this category. I invite others to join me in this accomplishment! Bonne Chance!
