When I returned to collecting, after a significant hiatus to establish my career, I started putting together a US type set (including gold). I don't remember the exact year but it was likely in the early 1990's or late 1980's. I was offered what appeared to be an XF 1804 2-1/2 dollar gold piece for roughly $3000. At the time that would've consumed my entire budget at the Long Beach show. Because the dealer was actually from my area I passed and decided to pick it up later. when I returned the coin was gone and prices for early gold about that time started rising logrhythmically. Haven't we all had that experience. And then we can never really find a coin that fills our memory of the one we missed. In my mind that $3000 coin was MS and I will probably always be chasing the memory.
