A full NGC Competition Set of 10 Gulden circulation issues from the reign of Queen Wilhelmina contains coins from eleven dates between 1897 and 1933, one coin per date.
Here are examples from the two scarce dates, 1897 and 1898, that show portraits of Wilhelmina at ages 11 and 18 respectively. The nine other dates are common: 1911-13 and 1917 (4 dates) that show a portrait of Wilhelmina at age 30; and 1925-27 and 1932-33 (5 dates) that show a portrait of Wilhelmina at age 42. My interest is in the two scarce dates.
On 10 Gulden coins from both 1897 and 1898, the reverse carries two symbols astride the date. On the right side, the caduceus is the mint mark for the Royal Dutch Mint at Utrecht. On the left side, the halberd is the privy mark of the mintmaster at Utrecht during those years, H. L. A. van den Wall Bake. [Biographical note: Hugo Laurens Adriaan van den Wall Bake, mintmaster 1888-1909, was the son of an earlier mintmaster, Herman Adriaan ("H. A.") van den Wall Bake, mintmaster 1846-1874.]
Each of the two scarce dates has two varieties as identified in the NGC World Coin Price Guide. For 1897 the varieties are "pearls fixed on edge" versus "pearls free from edge." For 1898 the varieties are "with dot" versus "without dot." Please see Owner Comments for each coin for a fuller explanation. It should be noted that NGC does not distinguish the varieties on its capsule labels or in its census, and allows only one coin per date in its Competition Set.
In order to view both varieties for each date please refer to my Custom Set for Young Wilhelmina that contains two examples per date, including one PCGS-graded example.
