This is a set of Seated Liberty Dollar circulation strikes.
In the early 1850's Congress voted to lower the silver content of all silver coins, EXCEPT the dollar, to keep the coins from having more intrinsic metal value than the face value of the coin. (That's why the arrows were placed at the date in 1853 on the lower denomination silver coins: to designate the reduction in silver weight.) Because the dollar coin had more "melt value" than face value, many were melted then and at many other times in the intervening years since. As a result, the circulation strikes often weren't saved, but were melted for their bullion content. Also, many were sent overseas (especially to the Orient) in trade.
Proofs, on the other hand, were made especially for collectors and usually were preserved. This has led to the unusual situation today where circulation strike Seated Dollars are often rarer than proofs, especially in better grades.
In addition, total mintages in this series were very low, especially by today's standards, only exceeding one million twice during the series (1871 and 1872). Many years had fewer than 50,000 struck, and some years fewer than 10,000.
They're America's premiere silver coin for the period 1840-1873, they're beautiful, and they're from an important period in the history of our country: Enjoy!
