United States/Philippines coins are fascinating issues and truly unique by nature. This interesting series of coins was (for the most part) minted in "The States,"; however, issued for the Philippine Islands when under U.S. sovereignty. There is nothing like them in terms of U.S. Federal Issues.
Due to the humid climate of the region in which these coins were issued, many specimens tend to have toned rather extensively. Not all are the most beautiful (a dark grainy black); yet, every now and then specimens can be found that are toned in such distinctively beautiful ways that it is rarely seen on any other type of coin ever produced by the U.S. Mint. These tend to be elusive and are highly prized.
To go even deeper, the U.S. Mint also struck proof issues from 1903-1908. This set examines the first year to give a brief historic glimpse into the introduction of the series minted for collectors.
Totaling 2,558 struck for each denomination, 1/2C through Peso, gem examples can be far more difficult to obtain than one might imagine. 2,558 is quite a minuscule mintage as is, and yet, there are many other factors that can be attributed to the amount of survivors for each denomination. To paraphrase, NGC states that "Scarcity results from the dumping of over 15 million pesos into Camila Bay during WWII when the islands would fall under Japanese control in early 1942. Only ~10 Million were recovered, all suffering major corrosion/salt water damage. Further, millions of Philippine silver coins were melted circa 1970-1980. As a Result, many early dates in the Philippine series are rarer than their mintages suggest."
