The Spanish Escudo is marked with its value as 1S, 2S, 4S, and 8S; the "S" being an abbreviation of scudo or its plural scudi. The 2 Escudo (dos scudi) coin is also known as a "Doubloon", (Doblon in Spanish), because of its face value of 2 scudi. Coin inscriptions were written in Latin (not to be confused with italian). The letter E was not used because in Latin it's written SCUDO or SCUDI for plural. The Reverse will usually reflect a crowned shield, surrounded by what appears to be an ornate gold chain with a fleece suspended from it, with "2" and "S" on either side of the shield but inside the chain; and the Obverse legend reads: "CAROL·IIII·D·G· HISP·ET IND·R" which is an abbreviation for “DEI GRATIA HISPANA RUM ET INDIARUM REX” (by the grace of God, King of Spain and the Indies). The Reverse legend reads: IN·UTROQ·FELIX· ·AUSPICE·DEO
The Crowned Shield on the Reverse is quartered in ten pieces: 1 Aragon, 2 Aragon-Sicily, 3 Austria, 4 Modern Burgundy, 5 Parma, 6 Tuscany, 7 Old Burgundy, 8 Flanders, 9 Tyrol, 10 Brabant.
Escudos were minted in Spain, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Mexico, Panama, and Peru and they circulated throughout the U.S. and Canada.
