The reverse proof finish is one of two new finishes offered by the US Mint during 2006. This series has been popular with collectors of modern coinage and has often been used by the mint to commemorate anniversaries of coin related events.
Reverse proof coins consist of devices with a mirrored finish set off against frosted fields, the exact opposite of traditional proof coins. The coin blanks are specially polished similar to other proof coins. Dies used in the process are acid etched with only the device features mirror polished. Each blank is struck multiple times, similar to regular proofs. Special handling ensures the quality of the finish on the coin as all reverse proof finishes are intended for collectors only.
