The US Mint initiated a Burnished Silver Eagle program, also known as the American Eagle Silver Uncirculated Program starting in 2006. West Point was the first mint facility to strike coins as part of this program, and remains the exclusive site for this program, to date.
The US Mint introduced two new collector finishes in 2006, the burnished finish that was similar to an uncirculated coin and the reverse proof, which reversed the finishes (mirrored devices and frosted fields) from the traditional proof coin style (mirrored fields and frosted devices). The 2006-W silver eagle and the 2006-W gold eagle marked the first burnished coins in each of their series while another 2006-W gold eagle and 2006-P silver eagle became the US Mint's first reverse proof coins.
Burnished coins are similar to their bullion counterparts in surface characteristics, although these coins are manufactured in lower quantities and are intended for the collector market. Burnished coins have specially prepared blanks that are struck twice and then undergo special handling. While bullion coins must be purchased through an authorized purchaser, these burnished versions are available only through the website of the US Mint.
All coins regardless of finish consist of 1 troy ounce of 99.9% pure silver or 31.1g. Diameter is 40.6mm and thickness is just under 3mm.
All coins in this series are distinguished by a mintmark on the reverse beneath the eagle's wings.
