A day in the life of prosperous Philadelphia – 1794 – George Washington is President and maintains a residence a few blocks from the new mint building now in its second year of minting coins. Thomas Jefferson is Secretary of State, John Adams is the Vice President with Alexander Hamilton serving as Secretary of the Treasury. At the helm of the mint we have director David Rittenhouse, Assayer Albion Cox and Chief Coiner Henry Voigt. The latter two gentlemen, fresh from having their bond amounts lowered to $1,000 and $5,000 respectively and covered – were now able to accept bullion to process into coins!
Thus 1794 became the first dated year containing coins other than the cent and the half cent which debuted in 1793. With the addition of the 1/2 dime, the Half Dollar (50 Cent piece) and the $1 coin, I am calling out 1794 as the first year for a real mint type set - and although the overall plan is to gather together some nice representations of Flowing Hair coins - I figured 1794 is as good a date as any to start the journey! Just like the millions of collectors today who still collect dated mint sets, many of whom started their collecting hobby this way. I am always looking for upgrades, trades and numismatic conversations – particularly if connections to history and numismatic legends are involved. Don't be shy in reaching out to me!
