This Walker Short Set is one that I began, after taking a break from the Early Set and, also, while still working on the One Per Date Set, as there was some overlap. I did it as a lower cost, stress-free way to still have some fun and while still being able to enjoy Walker half dollar collecting. It helped me to get my 'Walker fix', while waiting for the 'tougher' coins to come along.....a diversion, if you will.
I am adding only gems, premium gems or superb gems (MS 65s, MS 66s and MS 67s), which makes it a little more challenging but still VERY affordable and it represents some outstanding QUALITY for the buck.
The San Fransisco minted coins were very challenging to find in nice condition and with a good strike.
The others, while very affordable, are still not always easy, as Denver coins can vary considerably in striking quality, as well, so finding well struck ones takes some time, patience and some diligent searching.
I also look for good surface preservation, nice luster and lack of other distractions.
I have managed to find a couple with some decent toning and color (1947 & 1945 S), as well, including one graded NGC Star (1945 D).
I also like the old NGC and PCGS holders, too, so I pick them up when I can and some of them tend to be under graded, too. I buy CAC stickered coins, when the opportunity presents itself and, if there is not a significant premium attached to them, because of the green bean alone.
All of them, in the short set series, regardless of price or availability, are VERY beautiful coins.
This is a worthwhile set to invest your time and resources into, in my opinion. It is a very relaxing and rewarding outlet.
I am enjoying every minute of it and I never realized that it would have this much eye appeal and be this much FUN, in the process.
