Attempting to put together a high-grade (MS65/66 FBL) set of untoned Franklin halves.
I am trying to use NGC coins only but some of the higher grade dates are scare so I am supplementing with PCGS coins for now. Perhaps I will attempt to crossover at a later date. Stay tuned!
UPDATE 03/2015: I have been peeking around at other Franklin sets on collectors-society.com and other sites and I have noticed notes on people sending in coins in older holders for re-grading in the hopes of perhaps getting a star or a plus (+) added to their coin and thus increasing the value (and score) of their collection. I have a few of those "old holder" coins which I am hanging onto for now but I was intrigued enough to pick up a few PCGS old green holder Franklin halves (none of which are in this collection). They do command a premium when auctioned at HA or some other large numismatic auction house. I have not decided what to do with them except stockpile them and perhaps use them at one time to pick up the "king" 1953-S some day. We will see if that strategy pays off in the long run.
It is unfortunate that Franklins had their "hey day" back in the 1990s when the FBL designation was hatched. Prices ran up on these coins with the FBL designation and have showed a steady drop ever since (save for the 1953-S and perhaps a few others). I am hoping for a Renaissance and can see that these coins may be undervalued. Perhaps if the US Mint ever changes the Kennedy, new interest will grow.
