This set started out to be as many of the Top Pop coins that I could assemble. This is proving to be almost impossible for some dates due to the extremely small numbers available. With the introduction of the + (plus) added to the numerical grade has complicated this effort, as this is not an actual grade, but denotes a coin is considered to be at the top of the grade assigned. However this set has actually many more coins noted as "Top Pop" than you might expect in this NGC registry. And I still have holes to fill. Getting the Top Pop coins does not always mean that I am getting the higher point values like the Full Step coins bring.
I have always been attracted to a beautifully toned coin. It seems to me that back in the 80's they were not popular and did not bring the premium prices they do now. Not only does a nice toned coin bring a smile to the eye, but they are to me a flag that the coin is probably original, and has not been "tampered with". Having said that, there is nothing that compares to a "frosty white" coin with thick blazing luster on an original Jefferson nickel.
I have tried to select the fullest struck coins that I could find. That does not mean that they must be "Full Steps", as full steps does not always mean full strike. I look at the detail in Jefferson's hair. I examine the fullness of pillars on Monticello and the prominence of the triangular shape gable above them. Then, I look at the steps.
I have been able to include a few re-punched mintmark varieties to add to the complexity of the set. These include the following:
1949 D/S FS-501 MS 67
1954 S/S FS-502 MS 66
1955 D/S FS-501 MS 66
I find that some of the early NGC photos downloaded are dark or not high resolution, and not of sufficient quality to cut and post.
So, photos have been a huge challenge for me. 1. because I am not a professional photographer and do not have the professional equipment. And 2. I am very particular about what I post. Many of the photos represent many, many attempts to get the true character of the coin right. And still there a some currently displayed that I need to make the attempt once more, because I am not pleased with the current photo.
