The depression is growing and people all across the United States are suffering as the unemployment rate peaks at 8.7% in 1930. I can only Imagine how hard it was for my grandparents and how much a single quarter could purchase back then. But even with the depression the world did not stop and events happened both in the US and across the world. Pluto was discovered by astronomer Clyde W. Tombaugh at the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona. At the time Pluto was called the 9th planet in our solar system but was debunked in 2006.
There were a number of people born this year that would go on to become famous. Including; Neil Armstrong, Sean Connery (the very best Bond ever), Clint Eastwood (the real one not the back to the future one lol), and Sandra Day O'Connor.
The Chrysler building is completed and becomes the tallest building in the world. This was a short lived distinction as in 1931 the Empire State building eclipsed it. The cartoon character Betty Boop makes her debut and becomes a hit, it is thought that she was created in the 20's "flapper" style of several actresses.
1930 also saw the National Socialists party of Adolf Hitler become the second largest party in Germany. As we know today this was very important and led to the second world war.
So as we look back to this important year at the beginning of the great depression, its important to remember that while it was a very tough and difficult time life did continue and people overcame the strife and problems of the time. I would also add that the coinage of the time is some of the most beautiful ever coined in the U.S. from a design standpoint, at least in my opinion anyway.
