The first emission of coins put of by the Congo Free State for 5 centimes were struck in copper for 1887, 1888, and 1894. There is a well-known overdate 1888/7, which is far more common than the non-overdate issue. In fact, the plain 1888 5 centimes in gem is a significant rarity for this issue. You might find people selling the 188/7 accidentally calling it 1888. I have even seen this mistake with the grading services. The overdate is easily seen even with the naked eye.
The design changed to a smaller copper-nickel format in 1906 and 1908. There is a known overdate of 1908/6. I have yet to find a plain 1908 so far. These coins saw a small mintage of 100,000 and 180,000 respectively.
