I chose this particular Satin Finish mint set because of the number of uniquely designed coins. In 2009, the US Mint produced more different circulation coin designs than in any other year. The Satin Finish coins alone comprise 36 coins, and a full Business Strike and Satin set is a whopping 72 coins. Add in the 18 proofs (clad) plus the extra 8 silver proofs and you have a massive year set of 98 coins!

NOTES:
The SMS coins were only released in the 2009 U.S. Mint Sets. The total mint set production for 2009 was one of the lowest in modern times (1965 to present) with approximately 775,000 total released. Excepting of course 1983 and 1982 when no Mint Sets were released. Of particular interest, the 4 different SMS Lincoln cents were produced in the same composition as the original 1909 Lincoln cent (Bronze: 95% copper, 3% zinc, and 2% tin). By contrast, the general circulation cents were produced in the normal zinc core and copper exterior.
I am hopeful that the 2009 SMS Set will be a good long term investment and collection. I still think the SMS fever will eventually catch on and people will collect these with as much fervor as the proof sets.
