CYPRUS, 5 MILS 1963-1982 PROOF ISSUE
Cyprus was declared an independent Republic on August 16 1960, and became a member of the British Commonwealth in 1961.
The first coinage of the Republic, issued in November 1963, comprises five coins in denominations of 1 mil, 5, 25, 50 and 100 mils. Twenty years later, in October 1983, the currency system changed from mils to cents.
Proof sets of the first coinage of the Republic were issued in 1963 and 1982 and offered to collectors in plastic bags or cased.
