American Gold Buffalo Coins:
The American Buffalo, also known as a Gold Buffalo Coin, is a 24-karat gold bullion coin first offered for sale by the United States Mint on June 22, 2006. This was the first time ever that the United States Government has minted pure (.9999) 24-karat gold coins for the public. The coin has a legal tender (face) value of US$50. On the American Buffalo coin, the mound area of the reverse with the words FIVE CENTS has been changed to read $50 1 OZ. .9999 FINE GOLD. Also, the motto IN GOD WE TRUST, appearing on all U.S. gold coins since 1908, can be seen on the reverse to the left of and beneath the buffalo head.
2008 (Fractional sizes): In conjunction with the expanded number of collectible Gold Buffalo coins for the year, the United States Mint offered the 2008 Gold Buffalo Four Coin Set. For the first time, the US Mint had produced fractional weight coins for the popular 24 karat gold series in addition to the previously offered one ounce coins. Collectible uncirculated versions across the full range of denominations were also offered. The additional coins were available individually, or as part of the 4 Coin Sets produced for collectors who wanted a convenient way to purchase all four denominations.
Each 2008 Gold Buffalo 4 Coin Set included the one ounce $50 denomination, one-half ounce $25 denomination , one-quarter ounce $10 denomination, and one-tenth ounce $5 denomination. The coins were presented in a custom hardwood box with a matte finish and faux leather insert. The boxes were constructed so that the coins could be placed at an angle for display. Each set included a certificate of authenticity signed by the Director of the United States Mint. Separate 4 Coin Sets were available for proof and uncirculated coins.
In late 2008, the US Mint announced the discontinuation of all of the newly introduced collectible Gold Buffalo coins. This included all of the collectible uncirculated Gold Buffalo offerings and all of the fractional Proof Gold Buffalo offerings. For 2009 and subsequent years, the only Gold Buffalo produced for collectors would be the one ounce proof coin. Accordingly, there will be no additional Gold Buffalo Four Coin sets issued in the foreseeable future.
2013: In 2013 we celebrate the centennial anniversary of one of the United States Mint’s most beloved designs – the American Buffalo. Designed by James Earle Fraser, a student of the legendary sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens, the American Buffalo design was first featured on the Type I Buffalo (or Indian Head) nickel in 1913. This legendary design remained in use on the nickel for 25 years. The design was given new life when it was used on the American Buffalo One Ounce Gold Proof Coin in 2006, the first 24-karat gold proof coin ever struck by the United States Mint.
We celebrate this 100-year milestone with an American Buffalo One Ounce Gold Reverse Proof Coin. Reversing the mirror-like background finish of the traditional proof coin and applying it instead to the design elements of the coin achieves a magnificent visual contrast against the uniquely frosted background. This anniversary edition captures the beauty of coin design and the modernization of coin production over the last 100 years in one magnificent showpiece.
