The Grandview Collection consists of Liberty Double Eagles of all three types. The primary requirement for inclusion in the collection is eye appeal, focusing on coins with originality and minimal marks. Liberty Double Eagles are notorious for having heavily abraded surfaces due to storage and transportation in canvas bags, which resulted in small nicks on their surfaces called bag marks or contact marks. Since 2002, I have searched for Double Eagles with minimal abrasions for the grade, and have upgraded coins in the collection as more eye appealing examples became available.
Because Type 1 and early Type 2 Liberty Double Eagles are generally scarce or rare in mint state grades (and expensive), I have selected high quality About Uncirculated coins showing only minimal wear. I much prefer nice AU examples compared with bag marked low-end MS coins. Among common date Type 3s, I look for prooflike examples designated as such by NGC, however, there are several fully prooflike coins in the collection residing in PCGS holders. In my opinion, prooflike Double Eagles with reflective fields and contrasting devices are extremely attractive. These coins often need to be viewed “in-hand” to fully appreciate them as the reflective surfaces tend to exaggerate even minor surface abrasions. Additionally, truly prooflike Liberty Double Eagles are rare compared with typical examples, and represent less than 1% of the certified population at NGC.
