NGC Special Labels and Designations for the 2022 American Women Quarters

Posted on 2/7/2022

The first of the new quarters, honoring Maya Angelou, is being released this month. Special submission instructions must be followed. See the “Submission Instructions” section of this article.

The US Mint is releasing the new American Women Quarters, which feature renowned women whose accomplishments helped shape the United States. The quarter honoring Maya Angelou is the first to be released in a series of five designs that will be available this year. In addition, the US Mint is offering a five-coin Proof Set and a five-coin Silver Proof Set of the 2022 American Women Quarters. The multi-year program will run through 2025.

Numismatic Guaranty Company™ (NGC®) is offering an elegant American Women label to complement these special coins. This one-of-a-kind label displays the five women who are featured on the 2022 Quarters and is being offered by default for no additional charge. The popular NGC Early Releases and First Releases designations and labels are also available.

The reverses of 2022 Quarters will honor the following women:

  • Maya Angelou ‒ a prolific writer, whose poetic prose inspired generations of people
  • Sally Ride ‒ an astronaut and physicist who, in 1983, became the first American woman to go to space
  • Wilma Mankiller ‒ the first woman elected principal chief of the Cherokee Nation, in 1987
  • Nina Otero-Warren ‒ an educator who was the first Hispanic woman to run for Congress, in 1922
  • Anna May Wong ‒ first Chinese-American star in Hollywood

The obverse of the quarters in the program will have a design of George Washington by famous sculptor Laura Gardin Fraser, the first woman to design a US coin (the Alabama Centennial Half Dollar). In 1931, Congress held a competition for a profile design of George Washington to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the first president’s birth. Although highly regarded, Fraser’s design was passed over in favor of John Flanagan’s design. Her detailed design became the obverse for the 1999 George Washington Commemorative Gold Five Dollar coin.

Throughout the next four years, the American Women Quarters Program will release additional Quarters honoring women who have made an impact in various fields.
