Rare NGC-certified 1830 Quarter Eagle Realizes Over $200,000 in January Auction

A high-grade 1830 Quarter Eagle certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company™ (NGC®) was the top lot in Auction 55, presented by St. James’s Auctions. This rarity realized £168,000 (about $227,600), more than doubling its estimated price on January 26, 2022.
Ensconced in a collection for nearly 200 years, this 1830 Quarter Eagle graded NGC MS 66 (lot 118) is tied with another coin as the finest example recorded in the NGC Census. The 1830 Quarter Eagle is extremely rare and desirable, especially in a high grade.
Other NGC-certified highlights in the sale included:
- an England 1553 1 Sovereign graded NGC AU 55 (lot 27) that realized £72,000 (about $97,500)
- a Calabria, Taras circa 280-272 BC Gold Stater graded NGC Ancients Ch AU★, 4/5 Strike and 4/5 Surface with Fine Style (lot 1) that realized £69,600 (about $94,300)
- an England 1693 5 Guineas graded NGC AU 58 (lot 38) that realized £50,400 (about $68,300)
- an England 1701 Plain Sceptres 5 Guineas graded NGC AU 55 (lot 41) that realized £34,200 (about $46,300)
- a Central American Republic 1824NG M 8 Escudos graded NGC AU 58 (lot 111) that realized £25,800 (about $34,900)
- an England (1594-1596) 1 Pound graded NGC AU 55 (lot 29) that realized £24,600 (about $33,300)
- an England 1700 5 Guineas graded NGC AU 53 (lot 40) that realized £24,600 (about $33,300)
