NGC-certified Medieval French Coins Shine in December Auction

Gold coins from the Middle Ages certified NGC were among the top lots in the December 2021 auction presented by cgb.fr.

A spectacular French gold coin certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company™ (NGC®) was the top lot in a sale presented by CGB Numismatique Paris (cgb.fr), which is also an Official Submission Center for NGC, Numismatic Conservation Services™ (NCS®) and Paper Money Guaranty® (PMG®). The sale on December 7, 2021, featured numerous NGC-certified coins from ancient to modern times.

The France (1328-50) 1 Couronne d’or graded NGC MS 65 (lot 677684) realized €85,250 (about $97,600). It was one of several NGC-certified coins that were minted during the reign of King Philip VI (1328-1350) to achieve five-figure prices in the auction.

During his reign, Philip VI started the Hundred Years’ War amid friction with King Edward III of England. This particular coin is the higher graded of the two examples in the NGC Census.

Other NGC-certified highlights in the sale included:

  • a France (1328-50) 1 Lion d’or graded NGC MS 64 (lot 677586) that realized €20,907 (about $23,900)
  • a France (1328-50) Ange d’or graded NGC MS 63 (lot 677722) that realized €20,020 (about $22,900)
  • a France (1328-50) Double Royal d’or graded NGC MS 62 (lot 677692) that realized €19,807 (about $22,700)
  • a France (1328-50) Ange d’or graded NGC MS 63 (lot 677709) that realized €16,012 (about $18,300)
  • a France (1328-50) 1 Pavillon d’or graded NGC MS 64 (lot 677592) that realized €15,950 (about $18,200)
