In Memoriam: Harvey Stack, 1928–2022
Posted on 1/12/2022
Numismatic Guaranty Company™ (NGC®) joins the collecting community in mourning the passing of a true pioneer. Harvey Stack, who passed away on January 3, 2022, helped grow the rare coin business founded by his father in Manhattan into Stack's Bowers Galleries, a global numismatic powerhouse.
Over the years, Stack was at the forefront of the collecting community. He assisted in the development of Josiah K. Lilly's superb cabinet of gold coins, which was donated to the Smithsonian in the 1960s. He also worked with Louis E. Eliasberg Sr. to display his unparalleled collection in the 1970s.

Stack continued to stay involved with Stack's Bowers well into the 21st century, working with the Mark and Lottie Salton estate to bring their outstanding collection to auction, starting this month.
Stack gave back to the numismatic world, serving on the Board of the Professional Numismatists Guild for nearly a decade, including two years as president starting in 1989. He was also a longtime supporter of the American Numismatic Association and he advocated for initiatives that greatly enhanced the coin collecting hobby.
NGC joins its friends, colleagues and associates in paying respect to a man who left such a meaningful legacy on the numismatic world.
