Very Rare Brittany Coin Certified by NGC Part of Heritage Auction

An example of the last coin issued by an independent Brittany is among more than 150 coins certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company™ (NGC) in an upcoming Heritage Auctions sale. Bidding is already underway for The Brittany Collection of French Coins Showcase Auction, which concludes January 16, 2022.

The France (1498-99) Brittany Cadière d'Or of Anne graded NGC AU 58 (lot 99036) is the centerpiece of the Brittany Collection. It was issued to celebrate Anne, who from 1488 to 1514 was Duchess of Brittany, a strategic coastal region in what today is northwest France.

England and France had for centuries vied for influence in the region. In 1491, French King Charles VIII asserted his right to marry Anne. When he died in 1498, the throne went to his successor, Louis XII, who married Anne in 1499. Though Anne sought to maintain the independence of Brittany, it was eventually merged with France after her death in 1514.
