NGC-certified Mint State 1797 Half Eagle Featured in Stack's Bowers Sale

Posted on 11/12/2021

The November sale also includes a rare silver dollar struck around the same time.

Two spectacular 18th century rarities are among the US coins certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company™ (NGC®) that are attracting collectors to the Stack’s Bowers Rarities Night Baltimore Auction. Online bidding for the sale is already underway and will conclude November 23, 2021.

The Mint State survivor

One of the top lots in the sale is a 1797 Small Eagle Half Eagle of the 15-star variety, which is graded NGC MS 60 (lot 4104). It is the only Mint State example of this particular variety in the NGC Census. The 15 stars on the obverse represent the number of colonies in 1797. The small eagle on the reverse was derided at the time as a “chicken eagle” for its unimpressive stature.

An early silver dollar

A 1796 Small Date and Large Letters Silver Dollar is another highlight in the sale. Designed by Robert Scott, these silver dollars set a standard for future dollar coinage that paved the way for Morgan and Peace Dollars. This well-preserved coin is graded NGC MS 63 (lot 4044).

A rare 1870 Mint State

Meanwhile, one of the rarest dates for a Seated Liberty Half Dollar is also drawing attention in the sale (lot 4037). Struck at Carson City, that mint only produced 54,617 of the 1870 coins. This particular coin is graded NGC MS 62, tied for the highest grade among the 115 examples listed in the NGC Census.
