NGC Presents Gallery Showcasing Hird Collection Rarities
Posted on 11/5/2021
Numismatic Guaranty Company™ (NGC®) has added an image gallery to its websites for the selections from the Horace Hird Collection that energized the numismatic world at a September 2021 auction. In the sale presented by Spink, these 52 numismatic rarities realized £2.8 million (about $3.8 million), or over £50,000 (over $70,000) per coin — much more than presale estimates foretold.
Experts believed that Hird’s entire collection had been sold or gifted prior to his death in 1973, but these exquisite coins were rediscovered by his family. The auction was led by an England 1601 Gold Distress Relieved example graded NGC MS 61 that set a record for the highest price realized for an English coin at a Spink auction: £480,000 (about $650,000).
Collectors can browse the collection by six monarchs (Henry VII, Henry VIII, Edward VI, Elizabeth I, James I and Charles I) or search by keyword. An option also allows collectors to instantly see the coins that realized over £100,000. The details section for each coin is linked to its description at Spink's website.
