NGC-certified Vintage and Ancient Coins Offered in NAC Auction

Coins from three continents are among the highlights in the November sale.

A fascinating selection of ancient and vintage coins that are certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company™ (NGC®) are featured in two auctions presented by Numismatica Ars Classica NAC. Bidding for Auctions 126 and 128 is underway and will conclude November 17, 2021.

An ancient coin that was struck over 150 years after Alexander the Great conquered the region of Bactria is one of the top NGC-certified rarities in the sale. A Kingdom of Bactria Eucratides I (circa 170-145 B.C.) Gold Stater features the warrior-king, Eucratides I, who overthrew the Euthydemid dynasty and ruled the region in 171 B.C. Graded NGC Ancients MS, 5/5 Strike and 4/5 Surface with Fine Style, this coin (auction 126, lot 266) has an estimate of 60,000 CHF (about $65,480 USD).

Meanwhile, a Greece 1876A 50 Drachmai graded NGC MS 65+★ (auction 128, lot 462) is another highlight in the sale and has an estimate of 50,000 CHF (about $54,560 USD). The obverse features King George I, who was the longest-reigning Greek monarch, from 1863 until his assassination in 1913. The exceptional eye appeal of this coin earned it NGC’s trademarked Star (★) designation.

Other NGC-certified highlights in the sale include:

  • a Sicily, Syracuse circa 405-370 BC (Euainetos) Silver Decadrachm graded NGC Ancients Ch XF★, 4/5 Strike and 4/5 Surface with Fine Style and pedigreed to Weber (auction 126, lot 48), with an estimate of 50,000 CHF (about $54,560 USD)
  • a Ptolemaic Kingdom Berenice II (died 221 B.C.) under Ptolemy III (246-222 B.C.) Pentekaidekadrachm graded NGC Ancients Ch AU, 5/5 Strike and 3/5 Surface with Fine Style (auction 126, lot 278), with an estimate of 40,000 CHF (about $43,650 USD)
  • an Austria (1695-1711) Olmutz 5 Ducat graded NGC MS 63 (auction 128, lot 401), with an estimate of 35,000 CHF (about $38,190 USD)
  • a Zeugitana, Carthage circa 270-260 BC Gold Trihemistater graded NGC Ancients Ch AU, 5/5 Strike and 3/5 Surface with Fine Style (auction 126, lot 59, with an estimate of 30,000 CHF (about $32,740 USD)
  • a Sicily, Syracuse circa 344-335 B.C. Gold 30-Litral graded NGC Ancients Ch AU, 5/5 Strike and 3/5 Surface with Fine Style (auction 126, lot 50), with an estimate of 20,000 CHF (about $21,820 USD)
  • a Ptolemaic Kingdom, Arsinoe II (died 270/68 B.C.) issued after circa 193/2 B.C. Gold Octodrachm graded NGC Ancients MS, 5/5 Strike and 4/5 Surface (auction 126, lot 282), with an estimate of 20,000 CHF (about $21,820 USD)
  • a Greece 1876A 100 Drachmai graded NGC AU Details (auction 128, lot 463), with an estimate of 20,000 CHF (about $21,820 USD)
  • a Spain 1701S M 8 Escudos “VIII” Flower & Fleece graded NGC AU 55 (auction 128, lot 496), with an estimate price of 5,000 CHF (about $5,400 USD)
  • a Greece 1963 30 Drachmai Dynasty Centennial Anamnhstikon Presentation graded NGC SP 65 (auction 128, lot 470), with an estimate of 4,000 CHF (about $4,300 USD)
  • a Cyprus (1474-89) Crusader Gros-Catherine Cornaro graded NGC MS 64 (auction 128, lot 419), with an estimate of 3,000 CHF (about $3,200 USD)
