Spectacular NGC-certified Rare Coins from Italy and Russia in Sincona Sales
Posted on 11/5/2021
A beautiful gold coin minted for diplomacy and a rare platinum coin are at center stage among hundreds of world coins certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company™ (NGC®) in Sincona auctions this month. Online bidding is currently underway for Auction 71 and Auction 73, which the prestigious Switzerland-based numismatics firm is presenting November 21-23, 2021.
A gold treasure from Savoy
One of the top highlights in the sales is an Italy 1641 Savoy 10 Scudi D’Oro graded NGC MS 61 (Auction 73, lot 1477). Issued under Charles Emmanuel II, Duke of Savoy from 1638 to 1675, this 10 Scudi was likely minted as a presentation piece for a special guest or dignitary. It has a starting price of CHF 100,000 (about $109,000 USD)
This coin features on its obverse Duchess of Savoy Christine of France and her young son, Prince Charles Emmanuel II, who became Duke of Savoy upon his father’s death. On the reverse is Charles Emmanuel II’s coat of arms.
A rare platinum issue
Another fascinating coin being offered is a Russia 1836CNB 6 Roubles graded NGC PF 64+ Cameo (Auction 71, lot 193). Part of an ambitious and ultimately unsuccessful initiative to use platinum in Russian coinage, this piece has a starting price of CHF 80,000 (about $87,000 USD).
In 1828, Russia starting minting platinum coins in three denominations: 3, 6 and 12 Roubles. The 3 Roubles became the world’s only circulating platinum coin, while the 6 and 12 Roubles coins were given as gifts to diplomats and wealthy collectors. The platinum Roubles were so expensive to mint, however, that the Russian government ultimately decided to end production in 1845.
