A key ruler of Poland

One extremely rare coin offered in the sale is a Poland 1554 Ducat from the city of Danzig (lot 436). The obverse features Sigismund II Augustus, who was King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania from 1548 to 1572. His legacy was successfully uniting Poland and Lithuania, creating the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth that lasted for over 200 years. Graded NGC MS 64+, this rarity has a starting price of €35,000, or about $41,000 USD.

Struck from the world's oldest mint

Also in the sale is a Czechoslovakia 1934 Gold 10 Ducats Kremnica Mines 1973 Restrike graded NGC MS 67 (lot 477). It celebrates Kremnica, the site of historic gold mines and the oldest still-working mint in the world. Beginning in 1335, the mint produced Kremnica Ducats that grew to international fame because of the gold's consistent purity. The source of gold came from the mines in the Kremnica Mountains, in present-day Slovakia, until deterioration of the mines forced their closure. Struck from the last gold ore extracted from the mines in 1970, this stunning issue has a starting bid of €30,000 (about 35,000 USD).
